Route 66 Economic Impact Study
To better understand and quantify the positive effects of historic preservation along Route 66 and related tourism activities, an Economic Impact Study was undertaken by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in collaboration with the US National Park Service and World Monuments Fund, with the support of American Express. This volume, the Synthesis of Findings, summarizes the outcomes of the study and identifies opportunities for the preservation of Route 66 to enhance community revitalization, economic development, and sustainable tourism along America’s iconic Mother Road.
Preserving Route 66: A Directory of Financial and Technical Assistance (pdf) (Word)
A resource guide produced by the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, National Park Service. The directory provides listings of organizations and programs that can provide financial, technical, planning, research, and other assistance in the areas of historic preservation, research, oral history, interpretation, education, community and economic development, and advocacy.
Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties
All preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation projects funded through the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program must conform to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The standards are intended to promote responsible preservation practices that help protect our nation’s irreplaceable cultural resources. They are not, in and of themselves, to be used to make essential decisions about which features of historic buildings should be saved and which can be changed. Once a treatment is selected, however, the standards provide philosophical consistency to the work, including guidance in the use of appropriate materials, and repair and replacement techniques.
Technical Preservation Services Publications Catalog
Technical Preservation Services in Heritage Preservation Services of the National Park Service provides a publications catalog of over 100 publications that are readily available to public and private individuals and organizations who are interested in the care and rehabilitation of historic places. The catalog collection includes standards and guidelines; public service leaflets and books on using tax incentives; reports on conserving fragile historic building materials; case studies on specific structures; and a wealth of technical guidance on preserving historic buildings.
National Register of Historic Places Bulletins and Brochures
The National Register of Historic Places provides a series of bulletins and brochures to provide guidance to document, evaluate, and nominate historically significant sites to the National Register. The series is divided into four sections: the Basics, Property Types, Technical Assistance, and General Guidance. There are also several brochures that provide information on the programs of the National Register.
National Register of Historic Places Bibliography of Articles
The National Register of Historic places also provides a bibliography of articles that have been written about the National Register of Historic Places and the role it plays in preserving our nation’s historically significant cultural resources. These writings range from general informational articles that explain what the National Register is and how it works, to articles that present specific community case studies.
The National Center for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service produces CRM, a technical periodical to promote and maintain high standards for preserving and managing cultural resources.
The Rural Heritage Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation provides a bibliography of valuable resources related to preserving historic roads, rural landscapes, heritage tourism, and more.
Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, Library Holdings List
The National Park Service, Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program maintains a library of resources related to Route 66, preservation, and transportation history. The library is located at the program office in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
